TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - A woman charged with hitting and killing a 17-year-old girl in January took a plea deal Monday.
Officials with the Pima County Superior Court tell KGUN9 that Denise Maldonado Torres accepted a plea deal saying she attempted to leave the scene of an accident resulting in physical injury.
In January, deputies responded to the intersection of west Nebraska Street and south San Joaquin Avenue where they found 17-year-old Ruby Martinez lying on the ground.
She was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries but died the next day.
Deputies say Torres initially left the scene, but returned later after speaking to family members.
Ruby's mother spoke to 9OYS, she says-- to the legal system -- her daughter's death was worth less than a roach. She says probation shouldn't be an option for the woman who killed her daughter. The family will get the chance to write impact statements for the judge to read before the sentence.
She is due back in court August 16. Probation is an option as part of her sentencing.
