TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - A man missing for a week, in blistering heat was found Friday morning---dead.
84 year old Donald Johns had been missing from his home since June 21st.
Friday, someone found his body not far from his home.
When KGUN9 News first met Donald Johns wife Dee she was still hoping he would walk back into her life like he walked away a week ago.
But now we know there is no hope left.
Don and Dee Johns were approaching their 65th wedding Anniversary when we talked earlier this week.
Now, a week after he vanished, someone found Don Johns near I-10 and Miracle Mile, less than two miles from his home near I-10 and Prince.
He had gone for a walk Friday morning. He loved walking but this day he went out in blistering heat without a cell phone.
When he didn't return after about a half hour, Dee looked for him and couldn't find him. Neighbors and police searched and found nothing.
He was fit, but did have short term memory loss, from a bout with encephalitis.
On June 24th his wife said, "He loses his glasses. He can't remember where he put his coffee. He can't remember the man's name next door but he never got lost."
Johns' memory, his age, the terrible heat, and the fact most missing people turn up fairly fast led police to issue two bulletins urging people to watch for him. But when someone finally found Don Johns he had apparently been dead for several days.
It's natural to suspect heat exposure played a role on Donald Johns' death but it will take an autopsy to truly know.
Police have never suspected foul play in his disappearance
