TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - Advocates of same-sex military service men and women in Tucson are celebrating the Supreme Court's decision to strike down the Defense of Marriage Act.
Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel says the Department of Defense won't waste time extending the same benefits to same-sex military spouses. They should be in place by October 1.
Local advocates of same-sex military couples say they're overwhelmed by the court's decision, especially since it is only two years after the repeal of "Don't ask, don't tell."
"Our service members were allowed to be open and serve, but their families were just not taken care of," American Military Partners spokesperson Lauren Lamoly said. "They were invisible, and it is really amazing to see now that they will be supported."
