Tucson native running for New York office as openly transgender

NEW YORK (KGUN9-TV) - A Tucson native turned New Yorker is running for City Council there, and he's making headlines because he has spent most of his political life as a woman.

Mel Wymore was born and raised in Tucson as a woman, but moved to New York in 1988. Five years ago, he began the transition from woman to man.

If he wins the city council election in New York, he will be the first openly transgender person to win public office in New York City, and one of only a few in the nation.

He says his desire and passion for politics came from the sense of community he developed living in Tucson.

"Tucson was a great place to learn how to engage in civic process and how to make change through organizing people," said Wymore. "It's always been my passion and bringing it to New York was kind of natural."

Wymore is running in New York city's primary election in September.
