MESA, Ariz. (AP) - Authorities have released the names of a worker killed and another injured after a freeway construction accident in Mesa.
A section of the steel-and-wood support for an elevated ramp under construction fell Wednesday morning in Mesa.
Police say 43-year-old Steven Ariston of Peoria died in the accident while 20-year-old Alejandro Meraz suffered serious injuries but is in stable condition at a Mesa hospital.
Arizona Department of Transportation officials say the cause of the construction accident near Loop 202 and Warner Road is unknown and under investigation.
Authorities say the collapse occurred as crews worked on the new Arizona Route 24 Gateway Freeway, which will connect Ellsworth Road with Loop 202.
