Police arrest man in connection with sexual assault from 2000
TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - Ramon G. Trujillo, 45, has been arrested in connection with a sexual assault that took place in August 2000.
Sgt. Maria Hawke tells KGUN9 that on August 26, 2000, a woman was walking in the area of South 6th Avenue and Interstate 10. She heard a subject coming up from behind her and was then knocked to the ground. A man held her to the ground and sexually assaulted her.
In addition to the sexual assault, the victim suffered minor injuries from being knocked to the ground. The man ran from the scene and the victim called 9-1-1to report the attack, said Hawke.
Detectives processed the crime scene and collected evidence from the victim. The victim was transported to a local hospital where a forensic medical exam was conducted and a sexual assault kit was collected.
The analysis of the kit revealed the presence of an unknown male DNA profile. The DNA profile was uploaded into the CODIS database. No match was found.
On June 9, 2005, police were notified that the same male DNA profile had been associated to a sexual assault case from Phoenix, Arizona, but the source of the DNA remained unidentified.
On April 11, police were notified the source of the DNA profile had been identified through a match in the CODIS database.
The case was re-opened, said Hawke.
On June 12, Trujillo was located in Tucson and was taken into custody.
Trujillo was arrested for one count of sexual assault. He was transported and booked into the Pima County Jail.
