Attorneys: Ariz. officer probe may hurt DUI cases
CREATED Jun. 8, 2013
PHOENIX (AP) - Attorneys say dozens of drunken-driving cases in Phoenix could be altered or dismissed over a criminal probe of a Phoenix police officer over fraud allegations.
The Arizona Republic reports that attorney Lawrence Koplow says the failure to disclose information about allegations against office Jerry Schuiteboer prevents suspects from having the opportunity to challenge Schuiteboer's credibility.
Schuiteboer handles drinking while driving cases.
Court documents show that authorities have spent the past nine months investigating allegations that Officer Jerry Schuiteboer burned his pickup in the desert and collected more than $14,000 in an insurance settlement.
But city prosecutors are refusing to disclose in court information about Schuiteboer's pending case.
Police say Schuiteboer took about a month's leave beginning Feb. 27. Since he returned and has been working on "administrative duties."
