Need for speed: Tucson teen leads police in chase across Nogales

CREATED Jun. 7, 2013

NOGALES, Ariz. (KGUN9-TV) - When Nogales Police Department tells you to pull over, you should pull over.

"The car did not stop," said Lt. Carlos Jimenez.

In seconds a traffic stop turned into an all out police chase across Nogales.

"It looked like Christmas up in here," said Gilbert Corella, who witnessed the chase. "Everything was all lit up."

The man, or teen behind the wheel, 19-year-old Ivan Enrique Vigil. He sped up Anthony Drive, down Western to Grand, criss crossing steep hills along the border.

"At least 30 cop cars chasing him," said Corella.

Nogales PD and Border Patrol forced to pull back as he passed by crowded little league fields. The driver then heads up Adams, a popular drug smuggling road. Police thought he'd head into Mexico from here. The border fence was just a few yards away.

That's when police finally able to blow his tire. The damage completely knocked out his left tire. But if you think that stopped him, guess again. He kept going, nearly hurting Corella's aunt.

"He almost hit her," said Corella. "She said that's the car they're chasing, and I said, 'get out of the way'."

But on East St, the car rolled no more. He tried to run, but didn't make it far.

"Border Patrol was going crazy telling people to stay in their homes," said Corella.

Four illegal immigrants found in the car. But that's not all. Police also found a black bag. They thought they'd find drugs like heroin, instead they found pumpkin seeds.

"It was like a movie," said Corella.

Police say for this perp, there won't be a sequel.

Vigil is facing felony fleeing and endangerment charges for his joy ride. The Santa Cruz County Attorney's Office will review those. He may even face immigration charges because of the passengers found in his car.
