Church looks forward after fire, needs fundraiser help
TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - Behind decades-old doors, under normal circumstances, you could expect to see the St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church congregation to gather.
That is no longer an option.
"It's kind of like grieving a death. It's the loss of our property that we've had and worshiped in for decades," Father Earl Cantos told 9OYS.
Last week, an early morning fire raged through the church, torching walls and charring just about everything. Fire officials were forced to condemn the building. Fire damage totals $1 million.
"We want to get back on our feet as quickly as possible," Father Cantos continued.
Now, church members are asking for help in finding a fundraiser location. Church members hope to hold the fundraiser in late July. The event will raise money for the fire ravaged church.
Cantos tells Nine On Your Side insurance covers some of the costs but it does not cover much.
"It is coming together beautifully. There is support, I'm just now trying to find a venue where the people might not charge us to hold a concert to help the church through this time," Cantos said.
Church leaders are hoping someone will come forward and open their doors, so one day soon, they can rebuild and reopen theirs.
