TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - Tucson non-profit "Beads of Courage" is KGUN9's Community Partner for the month of June. The organization supports and promotes the well-being of children coping with serious illness as well as their parents and the clinicians who care for them. The program was established by U of A Nursing School graduate Jean Baruch in 2004.
"Beads of Courage" helps children tell their stories using colorful beads as symbols of courage to remember the treatments they receive in their medical journey to recovery. Beads are given out by nurses based on each child's specific treatment like a night in the hospital, chemotherapy or blood transfusion. For milestones in treatment, patients receive handmade one of a kind glass beads donated by members of the International Society of Glass Beadmakers.
The program was developed in collaboration with experts like nurses, doctors and social workers. It is already in 150 hospitals in six different countries around the world touching 30,000 childrens lives. You can find out more about "Beads of Courage" at http://www.beadsofcourage.org/ .
