Stuff-the-bus event ends with four buses full of supplies for OK

CREATED May. 24, 2013

TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - A powerful synergy was at work today in Tucson. KGUN 9 and Journal Broadcast radio stations got the word out. Sam Levitz provided the location. Sun Tran the transportation. You -- the people of Tucson -- the donations.

And Friday, World Care says this outpouring for the people of Oklahoma is one of its biggest emergency relief efforts ever.

It was a constant stream of cars and people, bringing with them donations of all kinds.

Lunch Trucks for a Cause donated 1000 pounds of dog food. A little girl talked her dentist into donating hundreds of toothbrushes.

Other donations included diapers, medical equipment, tools, hygiene items and stuffed toys.

People who truly feel a connection to those who are suffering.

Case in point, Kellie Owens, whose husband is from Moore, Okla. and actually attended the grade school where children died.

"It was horrendous," she said. "This is my way of helping."

Another person told 9 On Your Side, it could be us next time.

"I feel that I'm lucky that we're in Tucson," said Tony Bankemper. "But I feel sad that the tornadoes hit their homes and schools and stuff."

And we should point out that numerous children donated today -- Kid to Kid -- so to speak.

Among them, first-grader Zachary Olsen, who cared enough to give away some of his toys to Oklahoma's youngest victims.

And he even wrote a note:  "I'm sorry you lost everything in the storm. Here are some toys for you, I hope you enjoy them."

One other donation today, a U.S. flag that also came with a note:  "From Tucson:
God Bless all of OK."

In the end, the people of Tucson filled four Sun Tran buses for the people of Oklahoma.
