TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - Tucson Police are investigating an overnight stabbing on the Northeast side.
Sgt. Chris Widmer with Tucson Police says officers responded to the Arco AM/PM at Tanque Verde and Wrightstown just after 1 a.m. and found someone had stabbed the 22-year-old clerk.
Police do not think it was connected to a robbery, Widmer said.
A witness who saw the stabbing called 9-1-1, the AM/PM store manager told 9 On Your Side.
The clerk is fighting for his life at University of Arizona Medical Center. His employer, the AM/PM store manager, told 9 On Your Side his fiancee is with him at the hospital.
"He loved that girl forever," the store manager said.
The clerk grew up in Texas before he moved to Tucson, the store manager said. He worked at the convenience store for about the past six months.
"We took [him] under our wing," the store manager said.
Police are looking for a man wearing a grey hoodie. According to the AM/PM store manager, the man was wearing jeans and also had a black backpack. She says he fled the scene on foot.
Police have reviewed surveillance video images of the stabber, the store manager said.
Mick James told 9 On Your Side he is a regular customer at the AM/PM store.
"I can't believe it," James said, "these two kids in here, these two young men who work the graveyard everyday that I see them, they are both nice young guys and this is my neighborhood."
