Three-month old baby dies after abuse; 29-year-old man arrested
Genaro Urbina, 29, was arrested for child abuse Wednesday after a 3-month-old baby went to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. The baby died Thursday. Further charges are pending.
TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - A 3-month-old baby died Thursday as a result of injuries he received from being abused.
Sgt. Chris Widmer with Tucson Police tells KGUN9 that 29-year-old Genaro Urbina was arrested for child abuse. He is also facing second-degree murder charges.
Widmer says emergency crews were called to a home in the 5900 block of south Wood Crest Drive on May 13 to reports of an unresponsive baby.
They took the baby to a hospital where staff there deemed the boy's injuries non-accidental. The baby died Thursday.
Detectives continued their investigation and learned that the baby had been taken out of its parents custody by Child Protective Services and put in custody of the aunt and uncle.
Widmer says at the time of the abuse, the baby was in the care of his older cousin. The baby's cousin had a live-in boyfriend, Genaro Urbina.
Widmer says detectives learned that on the morning of May 13, Urbina woke up to address the crying baby. The baby received non-accidental trauma injuries. Urbina put the baby back to bed and also went back to bed.
The adult cousin of the baby woke up at 6 a.m. and found the baby unresponsive and call 9-1-1.
