Tucson (KGUN9-TV) - Tractors; detours; closed walkways. It's been tough getting around downtown.
But one major street is now in the clear. The Chicago Store's Mark Levkowitz can hardly contain his excitement.
"We are so excited about having Congress open," Levkowitz said. "Everyone can come downtown now. There's no traffic problems...We couldn't be happier."
Finally, Congress Street is open all the way west to the interstate. That means there are a lot more cars and people around.
Mario Martinez, walking around on Congress, said he's happy to see an end to the construction.
"You're able to drive around and see what's opened up," Martinez said. "It'll be great for the business owners that have toughed it out during this period of time."
Emmary Simpson of Tierra Antigua Realty tried to stay positive. Now, she's seeing light at the end of the tunnel.
"Just hang in there. It's going to happen. It's going to end," she would tell herself. "And now, here we are with Congress open."
Still, the final payoff will be when the streetcar rolls up.
"We have a streetcar right on the corner of 6th and Congress," Simpson said. "We can't wait until that streetcar gets rolling."
City of Tucson says that should happen around August.
