TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - An elderly man is in the hospital with lung and shoulder injuries after he fell off of a horse Monday afternoon.
Golder Ranch emergency personnel responded to the 3700 block of east Rollins Road just before 1:00 p.m. Monday for a man suffering from shoulder pain, according to Josh Hurguy with the Golder Ranch Fire Department.
Once on scene, crews discovered a 73-year-old man who had suffered serious injuries after falling off of a horse, Hurguy said.
While paramedics were examining the man, they noticed that he wasn't breathing properly, noting that the right side of his chest wasn't moving, according to Hurguy.
At that time, crews requested a medical helicopter.
While the helicopter was en route, paramedics performed a needle decompression on the man's chest to allow more air flow into his lungs, Hurguy said.
The man was transported to the hospital in critical condition, according to Hurguy.
Hurguy wishes to remind everyone to stay safe when engaging in activities such as hiking and horseback riding. He recommends that people bring enough water to stay hydrated, let someone know of your intended route and how long you plan to be gone and take a cell phone.
