Senate leader may block Medicaid expansion vote
PHOENIX (AP) - The Arizona Senate president has thrown up a new roadblock in front of Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer's push to expand Medicaid under the federal health care overhaul.
Republican Sen. Andy Biggs says he'll use his power to try to block a vote on any expansion bill. Biggs still expects a vote to be held but his opposition is a hindrance to happen because the president normally controls floor action.
Biggs is a vocal opponent of Brewer's plan to expand the state's Medicaid plan to those making up to 138 percent of the federal poverty level under President Barack Obama's health care law. It's supported by Democrats but has split the Republicans who control both chambers of the state Legislature.
Biggs and other opponents plan a rally at the Capitol Thursday.
