TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - The Pima County Sheriff's department is searching for a cop imposter who is trying to rip you off.
The Sheriff's Department said Tuesday afternoon someone reported the latest case of fraud by someone claiming to be a Tucson Police officer.
The Sheriff's Fraud unit says someone has been calling people and asking them to provide cash or financial information, claiming it is part of an investigation.
"We always encourage any citizen who wishes to confirm that a person self-identifying as a Tucson Police Officer is in fact affiliated with the Tucson Police Department to request the badge or payroll number from the person," said Tucson Police Sgt. Maria Hawke. "This is especially true in cases where the contact is made entirely over the phone."
TPD says you can call (520)791-4444 to verify whether that person is an actual officer.
The Sheriff's Department says law enforcement would never ask victims for money and if cash is needed as evidence, those requests would never be made over the phone.
If you have any information to help authorities catch a cop imposter, call 911 or 88-Crime.
