TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - Doctors from the University of Arizona School of Medicine are taking health literacy into Middle School classrooms. The classes give students insight into what makes their own bodies tick to learn how to care for their own health and become better informed patients.
Students put in hours of class time learning about the body, studying actual human body parts like donor hearts and doing reports for fellow classmates. Doctors have already conducted the medical class for Seniors at Basis Tucson North High School and now for middle school students at Basis Oro Valley.
Teachers say the intent is not to interest more students in medical careers but to make them smarter patients who understand the terminology and technology of health care.
