NEWARK, N.J. (KGUN9-TV) - The Rutgers Athletics Department published this tweet this morning: "Based upon recently revealed information and a review of previously discovered issues, Rutgers has terminated the contract of Mike Rice."
Today's firing comes after ESPN uncovered and aired video of practice showing men's basketball coach Rice shoving, throwing basketballs and using gay slurs at his players.
After Athletic Director Tim Pernetti says he first saw the video in the fall, Rutgers suspended Rice for three games, slapped him with a $50,000 fine and ordered him to take anger management classes.
The entire video aired for the first time Tuesday afternoon on ESPN's Outside the Lines.
Since this video went viral, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie and NBA superstar LeBron James were among the many high profile people calling on the university to fire Rice.
