TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - If there's a secret to staying safe in your neighborhood, it boils down to one thing: communication.
The folks living in the Palo Verde neighborhood are tackling all kinds of trouble with technology and good old-fashioned face time.
"People have a lot of different ways they can communicate with us and see what's going on in the nieghborhood," said Ronni Kotwica, Palo Verde Neighborhood Association president.
Kotwica said they're not immune from crime but it's not going to happen without someone noticing it.
"If there is a problem, because people are so aware, the number of watches we have, everybody is on board," she said.
Community resource officer Tammie Thomas has worked midtown for 17 years.
Thomas is in the loop with Kotwica and other neighbors thanks to that one word: communication.
Nine On Your Side asked, "What kind of advice would you give to anyone else who's struggling with what's going on in their neighborhood?"
"Well the best thing is start a neighborhood watch," Thomas said. "You need to know who's on your block. If you don't know who your neighbors are to the east, west, north, south -- then you've got a problem because you don't know who's suspicious and who isn't."
