Ariz. faces tough task with commercial vehicles
Web Producer: Taylor Higgins
PHOENIX (AP) - Policing commercial vehicle traffic in Arizona is an increasingly difficult task as more commercial trucks travel the state's highways than ever and the number of state police officers stands at 2002 levels.
The Arizona Republic reports that the cuts have forced state agencies to rely on each other to accomplish the enforcement and inspections designed to prevent wrecks.
The challenges of policing commercial trucks in Arizona are illustrated by the Feb. 13 rollover on Interstate 10 in Phoenix of a tractor-trailer that was hauling coffee creamer.
Two weeks later, the driver of the tractor-trailer was cited in Cochise County for failing to carry a vehicle-registration card.
That marked the fourth encounter that the driver had on the road with Arizona law enforcement in the past three years.
