TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - An incomplete cross-border smuggling tunnel was shut down today by federal authorities in the United States and Mexico during a bi-national border sweep in Nogales, Ariz.
Officials with the U.S Customs and Border Protection tell KGUN9 that the incomplete tunnel was located west of the DeConcini Port of Entry early Friday morning. The tunnel extended five feet into the United States but did not open into the country.
The bi-national patrol is designed to systematically check existing infrastructure for vulnerabilities.
Mexican authorities have taken one individual into custody who was actively digging.
