TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - Tucson is setting the stage for the upcoming Tucson Gem, Mineral & Fossil Showcase, which kicks off on Saturday, Feb. 2 and lasts until Feb. 17. Some shows are already underway.
In a news release, Jessica Stephens with the Tucson Visitors Bureau said that thousands of participants and attendees will flock to more than 40 sites around town. Dozens of shows take place at the same time in giant white tents, at hotels and resorts and at exhibit halls.
Although most of the gem and mineral shows around Tucson are free and open to the public, some are "wholesale only" shows that require a badge and tax-exempt number for admission.
Limited parking is available at most shows, but it's recommended that attendees check with individual shows for details. Parking is also available at Congress St. and I-10 frontage road (West side), open daily 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. The daily fee for most lots (public and private) is $5.
Additional downtown parking is available in numerous locations. For more parking information, call ParkWise at 520-791-5071 during business hours, Monday - Friday.
City crews wrapped up modern streetcar construction downtown Friday afternoon -- just in time for the showcase. Cushing Street under Interstate 10 is now open. A new stretch of Congress Street is now open, but the road remains closed between Church and Granada. For the very latest, visit the project's website.
The Tucson Visitors Bureau will help host the gem show hotline for those who need assistance during the hours of 8 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday - Friday. The hotline: 520-622-GEMS. It's posted additional information online.
Full details, including show listings, hours of operation, parking locations and transportation options (accurate shuttle schedules and maps), can be found on tucsongemshow.org.
