PEORIA, Ariz. (AP) - A Maricopa County Sheriff's deputy remains hospitalized in critical but stable condition after being shot in Peoria.

The suspect sought in the shooting has been found dead.

Authorities identify the deputy as Ruben Garcia, who's a 29-year sheriff's department veteran.

He was shot multiple times in a Peoria lot early Tuesday after he stopped a man in a truck.

The man's former girlfriend had earlier called authorities to say he was suicidal.

Witnesses say they heard shots ring out and saw the deputy on the ground in the parking lot.

Peoria police later spotted the suspect, who fired at officers and was then shot.

SWAT team officers ultimately found the 54-year-old man dead in a vehicle. It's not immediately known if he committed suicide and his name hasn't been released.
