TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - The town of Bisbee woke up to a winter wonderland this morning. Up to 8 inches of the white stuff in some places and a lot more than this small Southern Arizona town is used to.
9OYS reporter Marcelino Benito asked people when the last time they saw snow was. Hugo Tovar replied, "Snow, whoa, this much, at least several years."
Alec Quirroz replied, "When I was 4 years old, I'm 19 now. So it's been a while."
This New Year's Eve, three to eight inches of snow blanketed Bisbee. And despite a tiny bit of melting, for the most part this time it stuck around.
"Everytime it snows here, in 30 minutes it just melts," said Quirroz.
But on the eve of 2013, the snow was just enough for the locals to hurl some snow balls at each other, and more than enough for tourists from Mexico and all across Arizona to make the drive and bring some business to Bisbee.
Benito asked if it was worth the drive. Colleen Curran replied, "Oh yeah, it's been really fun."
Especially fun for the kids, a lot of them had never seen snow. Kids spent the evening hurling snow ball after snowball at friends and family, and yes, even complete strangers.
"The kids are having fun making snowballs and picking fights with people they don't know," she said.
Folks tell 9OYS it's a snow day the town of Bisbee won't soon forget.
"It's a beautiful thing for New Year's," said Tovar. "It's been a couple years since we saw something like this. It's real nice and just a wonderful day."
