Police on shooter drill training: "We've been doing this ever since Columbine"

TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - Yelling, high stress, and loud bangs. That is what a police officer needs to be able to handle, when confronted by an ongoing shooting.

To help simulate that reality, the Tucson Police Department requires all officers in training to go through an active shooter drill before they go out into the field -- to protect our community.

"We've been doing this ever since Columbine, so it's nothing new, we do this for every police academy recruit that goes through and periodically we do a refresher for the entire police department," said Capt. David Azuelo with the Tucson Police Department.

Today, twenty-seven officers in training went through three different drills at Reynolds Elementary, which were empty, using paintball bullets.

"Teaching them to go directly to the threat, stop that person from killing everyone, and then be able to compress the period of time it takes to render aide to the victims who are already hurt," he said.

It's as close to reality as it's going to get, in which victims are at risk of being shot.

"This is very different from normal duties that they carry out, so we're really preparing them for the worst case scenarios that they could see, and that is an active shooter," said Azuelo.
