TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - A 22-year-old woman died early Saturday morning after a nearly head-on collision, and police say the driver of the other car was arrested.
Sgt. Maria Hawke with Tucson Police tells KGUN9 that Mandie Scammell was heading northbound on South La Cholla Road at about 2:45 a.m. Saturday.
Scammell was driving a Jeep Cherokee and collided with a Lincoln Navigator, driven by Robert Ballesteros, Jr., that was heading southbound on South La Cholla Road.
Both vehicles went off the roadway on the northeastern corner of the intersection at West San Marcos.
The driver and passenger of the Lincoln Navigator were taken to a nearby hospital with serious, but not life-threatening injuries.
Scammell was pronounced dead at the scene.
Ballesteros was arrested Sunday and charged with one count of second degree murder, one count of aggravated assault, one count of criminal damage and one count of aggravated DUI. Those are all felony offenses.
The intersection at South La Cholla Road and West San Marcos was closed for several hours after the crash.
