TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - A Tucson woman is in critical condition after a crashing into a tree Monday night.
Crews from the Green Valley Fire District, Tubac Fire District, and Elephant Head Volunteer Fire Department responded to Arivaca Junction, near KP 48 on I-19 around 5:00 p.m. Monday after a passenger car lost control and crashed into the median, according to Chuck Wunder with the Green Valley Fire District.
Once on scene, crews discovered a heavily damaged vehicle that was wrapped around a tree. The driver, a 22-year-old woman was trapped inside, according to Wunder.
Wunder tells KGUN9 that crews had to use the jaws of life to fee the woman from the vehicle. Once removed, she was transported to University of Arizona Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.
Northbound I-19 was shut down for about an hour while crews worked to rescue the woman and clear the scene.
Wunder says the Department of Public Safety is investigating the cause of the accident.
