Tucson (KGUN9-TV) - With a sign on the door saying the store would close at noon, customers packed the Hostess Bakery Outlet Monday thinking it was the last day to get their favorite Hostess products.
Even though the store is picked over and won't receive any new shipments, a new sign hanging this morning says the store will remain open until Wednesday, Nov. 21.
Some of the store's final customers tell 9 On Your Side that they'll miss buying their favorite Hostess sweets and the friendly face they're used to seeing at the checkout.
Even the lucky ones who got their hands on a Twinkie, such as Leslie Cooney, say they're saddened to see Tucson's Hostess Bakery Outlet close its doors.
"The lady that runs the place, we cried yesterday," Cooney said. "She's been here forever. She's a pillar in our community and now she's out of her job."
Even though she's losing her job, the longtime checkout clerk respected the company's wishes to not speak on camera with 9 On your Side.
"I really wish that she gets another job," customer Carlos Rosales told 9 On Your Side. "I wish that someone would try to give her another job. It's just a shame that 18,000 people will be out of jobs."
Like many customers who came through the doors on Monday, Cara Bachtel was a regular customer.
"I come in once a month from Benson," she said.
Bachtel stocked up on loaves of bread she plans to donate to the Benson Food Bank.
"I could buy this bread anywhere but the people lost their jobs right before the holidays," Bachtel said. "It's a stressful time to begin with and now not to know what they're going to do, it's really sad."
Hostess and the union are going back to the negotiating table for a final round of talks.
