PIMA COUNTY, Ariz. (KGUN9-TV) - What these criminals did is enough to scare anyone: storming convenience stores and threatening employees with a large knife. They’ve gotten away with the robberies so far, but law enforcement hope surveillance images and help from the public will be their downfall.
With lime green bandanas covering their faces, the store surveillance video shows the two men barge into a Quik Mart convenience store, heading straight for the register.
They wore work gloves and baseball caps. One held a large knife in his hand, as he tried -- unsuccessfully -- to pry the register open. He forced the cashier to do it then grabbed cash and cigarettes.
The second man held a pocketknife. They both also verbally threatened the clerk, the Pima County Sheriff's Department reported.
Not even two minutes later, the video shows the pair leaving with the loot.
That robbery happened Thursday at the Quik Mart on West Roger Road. That same early morning, investigators said it appears the same men also robbed the Quik Mart on East Benson Highway.
Quik Mart corporate offices didn’t return 9 On Your Side’s requests for comment. Employees said hey hoped the men are caught.
Pima County Sheriff’s Department detective Andy Anderson said the store employees at the time of the robberies did the right thing.
“The best thing in these types of situations is to do as your told,” the detective in the robbery/assault unit said. “Don't try to aggravate the situation.”
Investigators want to catch the robbers quickly before they could strike again and possibly more boldly.
“Is that a concern here?” reporter Kevin Keen asked Anderson. “It most definitely is,” he answered. "In this case, they had a plan, it appeared, and they were very determined.”
“The main thing we're trying to do is to prevent it from becoming something where someone actually does get seriously injured or hurt,” Anderson added.
The sheriff's department reported one robber is about 5'7'' to 5'10'' tall with a thin build; the second is about 5'4'' to 5'7'' with a medium build. If you know the two men or have information about these crimes, call 88-CRIME or 9-1-1.
