RED LAKE, Ariz. (KGUN9-TV) - A man and woman were arrested and charged with mutliple counts of theft after Coconino County Sheriff's deputies and detectives served a search warrant at their house.
Steven Melvin, 58, and Kathryn Melvin, 50, were reported by a Red Lake resident for stealing multiple items from the resident's home. After the resident confronted the couple, Kathryn returned an item of jewelry and Steven returned five watches, with a combined value of $1,000, according to Gerry Blair with the Coconino County Sheriff's Department.
Detectives then discovered that Steven had pawned two other items at a local pawn shop one week later. The description of the items pawned matched another resident's description of her missing items. Security cameras at the pawn shop confirmed that Steve Melvin pawned these items.
Blair tells KGUN9 that during the investigation, detectives learned that the couple had stolen items from multiple residences in the Red Lake area while house sitting for multiple neighbors.
During the service of the search warrant, detectives discovered multiple stolen items, plus hundreds of narcotic pill or tablet medications that appeared ready for sale. Detectives also found numerous jewelry and collectable items that were unclaimed, according to Blair.
Steven Melvin was arrested on two counts of felony trafficking in stolen property, two counts of misdemeanor theft. Kathryn Melvin was arrested for one count of felony theft, four counts of felony possession of narcotic drugs for dale, and one count of misdemeanor possession of marijuana, Blair says.
The Coconino County Sheriff's Office urges any other residents who have allowed the Melvin's to house sit to contact Detective Mark Pierz at (928) 226-5039.
