El Tour de Tucson turns 30 and honors Andy Clarke

TUCSON (Perimeter Bicylcing) Richard J. DeBernardis, President and CEO of Perimeter Bicycling, announced today that The University of Arizona Medical Center 30th El Tour de Tucson presented by Casino del Sol Resort is dedicated to Andy Clarke – America’s Leading Bicycling Advocate and President of League of American Bicyclists.

For eight years, Andy has led the League of American Bicyclists – representing the interests of the nation’s 57 million cyclists with a current membership of 300,000.  In June of 2006, after a bicycle ride across the award-winning Diamondback Bridge, he presented the first-ever regional Bicycle Friendly Community Gold Award to the Tucson Arizona/Pima Eastern region.   Andy is on the Board of America Bikes and is a member of the Association of Pedestrian and Bicycling Professionals.  (For more information and a photo of Andy or an invitation to the Dedication Dinner, visit www.perimeterbicycling.com)

DeBernardis also announced new routes for the Diamond Children’s El Tour Fun Ride presented by McDonald’s – a 10-mile and a 5-mile course following the multi-use path along the Santa Cruz River and a fun ¼-mile adventure course for the very young.  The Main Event courses remain the same as last year, all finishing at the HSL Properties El Tour Start/Finish Line at Armory Park across from Children’s Museum Tuscon.

The University of Arizona Medical Center continues as the title sponsor of El Tour.  The University of Arizona Medical Center – University Campus (formerly UMC) and South Campus (formerly UPH Hospital) are the primary teaching hospitals for the University of Arizona College of Medicine, Pharmacy, Nursing and Public Health.  These hospitals, as well as affiliated clinics, a physician group practice and several health plans, are all part of The University of Arizona Health Network.  With more than 6,000 employees, The University of Arizona Health Network is one of the region’s largest employers.  Its mission:  Advancing health and wellness through education, research and patient care.

Casino del Sol Resort, El Tour’s presenting sponsor this year, has unveiled a new place to play in Tucson.  Guests can now enjoy 215 elegantly appointed rooms and suites, a new Conference Center including a ballroom for up to 2,000 guests, five restaurants including fine dining at the new PY Steakhouse, premium cocktails in the Prema Lobby Lounge and a unique Spa, Fitness Center and Pool. El Tour cyclists will raise funds for Tu Nidito Children and Family Services, Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, American Parkinson Disease Association, Water For People, Ben’s Bells Project, UAMC Pediatric Oncology, Humane Society of Southern Arizona, JDRF, Team Lizzie Bell, Rotary International Polio Plus, Beads of Courage, Blue Marble Institute, Lions Club International – Cycle for Sight, myTeam Triumph, Susan G. Komen for the Cure, The Haven, Carrie Tingley Hospital Foundation, Ronald McDonald House, Uphill Into The Wind and the YMCA. El Tour Super Week, includes a 3-day Sanofi El Tour Bike, Fitness & Health EXPO, El Tour Orientation Meetings, a Rusing, Lopez & Lizardi El Tour Dedication Dinner at Casino del Sol Resort and an 8-day Indoor El Tour program.

Ride day begins with the 111-mile Main Event followed by the 85-Mile El Tour, the Intuit 60-Mile El Tour, the Sanofi 42-Mile El Tour and the Diamond Children’s El Tour Fun Ride presented by McDonald’s.  Kids activities, music, a Michelob ULTRA Garden, food, massages and an on-going Grand Cycling Awards Ceremony round out the day.
