TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - Firefighters responded to early morning apartment fire that burned through multiple units.

Rural/Metro firefighters were dispatched to the Highland Apartments near River Road and Craycroft Road at around 5:00 a.m. Sunday, according to Grant Cesarek with the Rural/Metro Fire Department.

The first crew on scene discovered six units burning with heavy smoke spreading to other nearby units. Firefighters requested backup support after heavy black smoke and large flames spread to the roof of the building.

Cesarek tells KGUN9 that several occupants were alerted by the sound of smoke detectors and others were alerted by firefighters who worked quickly to evacuate the building.

One occupant had to be transported to a local hospital for smoke inhalation and burns, according to Cesarek.

It took approximately 50 minutes to get the fire under control. Fire investigators are still on scene trying to determine the cause of the fire.

Red cross also responded to the apartment complex to assist residents with emergency food, clothing, shelter and mental health services.

Theresa Grant with the Red Cross says 23 families and were displaced by the fire and one pet perished in the fire.
