FLORENCE, Ariz., (KGUN9-TV) - A teen has passed away after his vehicle was struck by a speeding driver.
Pinal County deputies responded to to the intersection of Chuichu Road after 27-year-old Felipe Urias sped through a posted stop sign just before 6:30 p.m. Friday, according to Elias Johnson with the Pinal County Sheriff's Office.
Johnson tells KGUN9 that Urias struck a 1987 Ford Bronco that was driven by 17-year-old Albert Arias of Casa Grande. The collision caused Arias' Bronco to slam into a utility pole.
Arias was severely injured during the accident and he was transported by helicopter to a Phoenix hospital. He passed away Saturday.
The young teen was a three-year member of the Casa Grande Police Department's Youth Explorer program and he was preparing for a career in law enforcement.
During the initial investigation, deputies discovered that Urias was previously arrested for criminal speed back in February 2012 after he was caught traveling at 85 mph in a 50 mph zone.
Urias could face additional charges pending a full investigation of Friday's collision.
