Police investigating officer-involved shooting
TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - Tucson police are investigating an officer-involved shooting in which 23-year-old Johnny Castillo-Romero was shot by 17-year-veteran Sgt. Ray Mecheel.
At around 7:30 a.m. Saturday, Tucson police responded to a call about a man in a wheel chair threatening to shoot another man near 190 west Valencia Road, according to Sgt. Chris Widmer with the Tucson Police Department.
Widmer tells KGUN9 that once on scene, police found a hispanic male in a wheel chair. Police confronted the man who then reached for his wasteband and pulled out a gun.
Sgt. Mecheel then shot at Castillo-Romero, according to Widmer.
The man was taken to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Nearby neighbors say the area is a hotbed for crime.
“I don't feel safe and I won’t be living here very long. No, I will be moving somewhere else,” said Elizabeth Arevalo who lives across the street.
“They have to be patrolling more of the area. Especially in these apartments for drug activity and murders,” said Arevallo.
Officer from Internal Affairs will be investigation as well to ensure the shooting was just. The officer involved will also be taken off duty while the investigation continues. Widmer tells KGUN9 that is normal procedure.
