PHOENIX (AP) - It's about the size of a cellphone and it is revolutionizing police work around Arizona.

Authorities say the device makes suspects easier to track and evidence more readily available.

Police use the MorpholDent to quickly to scan fingerprints in the field and match them with those stored in a statewide databank.

The Arizona Republic says Phoenix, Mesa, Tempe and Glendale police are using the devices in a free pilot program launched by the Virginia manufacturer.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety is also participating and the state Department of Corrections uses the device, to check the identity of inmates at intake and release.

Peoria, Yuma and Lake Havasu City police will get the portable scanners within months, along with the Yuma County Sheriff's Office.
