TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - A serial bank robber is finally in custody after he tried to turn himself in to police multiple times.

William David Leverett, 49, was persuaded to turned himself in by his ex-girlfriend who saw his surveillance photographs on the local news, according to Deputy Tom Peine with the Pima County Sheriff's Department.

Leverett was reluctant to turn himself in at first, but when he finally agreed to accompany his ex-girlfriend to the police station, there was no one there.

Peine says the couple drove to the Tucson Police Department station on Stone Avenue and found the location unattended. Next, they drove to the station on Miracle Mile and once again couldn't find authorities.

Finally the couple drove straight to the Pima County Jail and deputies took Leverett into custody, according to Peine.

Leverett was charged with multiple counts of robbery for robbing banks on August 31 in Green Valley and on August 24 on Ina Road, according to a release sent by the Pima County Sheriff's Department.

The Tucson police also charged Leverett with one count of robbery for an incident that occurred at the Pima Federal Credit Union at 3730 north Stone Avenue around 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, August 21, according to Chris Widmer with the Tucson Police Department.

During the robbery, Leverett presented a note to a bank teller that demanded money and threatened harm. He was given an undisclosed amount of money before he left the bank and ran into a neighboring apartment complex, Widmer says.

Leverett is also the suspect in at least one other bank robbery that took place outside of the Tucson area, according to Widmer.

Authorities with the FBI Phoenix Division, TPD and Pima County Sheriff's Department are continuing their investigation into Leverett, who has been dubbed Smokey the Bandit because of his grey hair and goatee and reports that he smells like cigarettes.
