Phoenix wins grant to hire more firefighters
PHOENIX (AP) The city of Phoenix has won a $4.4 million from the Federal Emergency Management Agency to hire 28 full-time firefighters for positions eliminated as part of more than $80 million in cuts.
City officials tell The Arizona Republic (http://bit.ly/OaLRdb) that the grant money will be used to help the Fire Department staff its emergency units in accordance with national fire-protection standards.
Phoenix received a similar $6.8 million grant last year to hire 42 firefighters.
The department has lost positions in recent years due to attrition.
City officials have said that they need help to maintain four-man engine crews.
