PICACHO PEAK, Ariz. (KGUN9-TV) - A building fire in Picacho Peak sustained $90,000 worth in damages Sunday night.
The Avra Valley Fire District responded to the hundred block of 15600 S Hwy 87 where two commercial buildings were on fire Sunday night according to Avra Valley Fire Public Information Officer, Pat Calhoun.
At around 8:30 p.m. Sunday night, Avra Valley Fire was called to respond to the fire which was 22 miles out of their jurisdiction. The Pinal County Sheriff's Office called this district because the location of the fire was in a "no mans land" near Picacho Peak.
When firefighters arrived on scene, one of the buildings was totally engulfed in flames and the other had just caught fire. There was an added urgency to get the fire under control because the Delta & Pine Co cotton gin was in danger of catching fire if it spread.
Firefighters were concerned pesticides and other agricultural chemicals could harm people if the fire reached them. Because of the remote location, they were also worried their water supply would not be enough to put out the fire.
The fire was under control within 18 minutes of arrival and no major problems occurred. Both buildings were abandoned and noone was reported hurt.
The fire is still being investigated.
