TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - It's hard to believe, but Mother's Day is the busiest day of the year for local florists, even busier than Valentines Day.
"Everybody has a mom, not everybody has a sweetheart," said Jeanette Hootman, a driver at Inglis Florists.
The phone rang off the hook at Inglis Florists on Broadway near Tucson Blvd. Sons, daughters and husbands rushed to call in those last minute orders. That meant florists were busy putting the final touches on flowers for mom.
"It's very labor intensive work," said co-owner Michael Butterbrodt. "We receive the flowers, clean them, put them in water, cool them, then we have to prepare the vases."
Once the arrangements are done, a team of drivers delivered more than 600 orders called in for Sunday. All together Butterbrodt says it brings their order tally to 5,500. 9OYS cameras went along for the ride as Hootman went on an early morning delivery. She helped surprise a totally baffled Elizabeth Peck.
"What a treat, what a treat," said Peck, as she opened the card only to discover it was her son who'd sent the flowers. 9OYS reporter Marcelino Benito asked her if the special delivery just made her Mother's Day.
"Oh yeah, it definitely did," Peck said. "He hasn't done this in a long time."
Hootman tells KGUN 9 that reactions similar to Peck's make all the difference. She says it makes her job worth it.
"I could not ask for a more joyous job than what I have here," Hootman said.
The crew at Inglis Florists says they have no set hours on Mother's Day. Drivers will be on the road until the last arrangement is delivered.
