PHOENIX, Ariz. (AP)  - Arizona legislators have approved a negotiated compromise to allow electronic billboards in some parts of the state but not others where astronomy observatories are located.

The bill approved on final House and Senate votes Monday replaces a bill that Gov. Jan Brewer vetoed earlier in the legislative session.

At stake are thousands of jobs in the astronomical observatory industry and dozens of electronic billboards serving thousands of advertisers.

The new legislation now goes to the governor. It allows the lighted digital signs in the Phoenix area and much of southwestern Arizona, but bans them from elsewhere in the state.

The billboard industry championed the original bill following a November court ruling that declared existing digital illegal under a decades-old highway beautification law.
