PHOENIX, Ariz. (AP) - Some former top prosecutors have called on U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder to wind up the federal abuse-of-power investigation of Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio.
Former U.S. Attorney Paul Charlton, ex-Arizona Attorney General Terry Goddard and former Maricopa County Attorney Rick Romley say Holder should either charge Arpaio or exonerate him.
The three men plus former Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon sent a two-page letter last Friday to Holder, asking him to expedite a conclusion to the probe. The Justice Department has been investigating Arpaio since 2009.
Authorities say the four decided to send the letter after an Arizona Supreme Court disciplinary panel's conclusion last week.
The panel concluded that there was evidence Arpaio conspired with several former county prosecutors to prosecute a judge without probable cause.
