WASHINGTON (AP) - Don Bivens, a top Democratic challenger in Arizona's U.S. Senate race, has ended his campaign, saying the primary battle was draining resources the party needed to win in November.

Bivens' withdrawal clears a path in the Democratic primary for former surgeon general Richard Carmona.

Bivens is a former party chairman who got into the Senate race first, but Democratic officials in Washington made clear that they were recruiting Carmona to become the party's nominee.

Bivens said he was confident he could have won the primary fight, but the cost and impact could diminish the chances for a Democrat to win in November.

Rep. Jeff Flake and businessman Wil Cardon are competing in Arizona's Republican primary.
