Lady Wildcats fall to ASU 68-53
LOS ANGELES, CA (UA Athletics) – The University of Arizona Wildcat women’s basketball team saw its Pacific Life Pac-12 Tournament run come to an end with a 68-53 loss to the Arizona State Sun Devils on Thursday afternoon. Arizona’s season ends with a 15-17 record as Arizona State advanced to 20-10.
“I want to give a lot of credit to Arizona State for how they played the game,” head coach Niya Butts said. “Our first half was certainly not one of our better halves. We couldn’t get stops when we needed them and they shot almost 60 percent. We came out in the second half and cut it to six at one point. We made a game of it and got to the free throw line 20 times. There is certainly something to be said for that but at the end of the day, we didn’t do enough to get the win.”
Junior guard Davellyn Whyte led the Cats in scoring for the 17th time this season with 17 points. She also had five rebounds, one assist and three steals. Sophomore guard Candice Warthen collected 11 points, four rebounds and two assists. Senior guard Reiko Thomas scored 10 points and chipped in with three rebounds and one assist.
Turnovers were the tale of the day as UA gave up 17, good for 21 Sun Devil points. At the other end, UA only managed four points off 12 ASU mishaps. The Cats were barely edged out at the boards, 37-36, but made the most of their 16 offensive rebounds with 17 second-chance points. Arizona shot 29.6 percent from the field (16-54), 41.7 percent from three-point range (5-12) and 80 percent from the charity stripe (16-20).
For the Wildcats, the starting five included sophomore forward Erica Barnes, freshman center Aley Rohde, Thomas, Warthen and Whyte. Senior guard Shanita Arnold had the most minutes off the bench with 21. She collected seven points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals. Today’s game marks the final contest for seniors Arnold and Thomas.
For Arizona State, senior forward Kimberly Brandon paced the squad with 15 points, six rebounds, three assists, one block and one steal. Senior center Kali Bennett chipped in with 10 points and six rebounds. The Sun Devils shot 46.2 percent from the field (24-52), 31.3 percent from behind the arc (5-16) and 68.2 percent from the free throw line (15-22).
In two tournament games, Whyte averaged 17.5 points, 5.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists. Warthen averaged 14.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and 4.0 assists. Arnold averaged 10.5 points, 1.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists.
The 12th-seeded Wildcats advanced to Thursday’s quarterfinals with a 61-57 win over fifth-seeded UCLA in Wednesday’s opening round of play. For continued coverage of Arizona Wildcat women’s basketball, visit ArizonaWildcats.com.
