TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - Three people have been arrested following a traffic stop this morning. One of the people arrested includes Pauline Guerena, sister-in-law to Jose Guerena, the ex-marine who was shot and killed in a fatal SWAT raid in May 2011.
Deputy Dawn Barkman with PCSD tells KGUN9 that deputies conducted a traffic stop on two vehicles seen leaving a residence in the 6200 block of West Oklahoma.
Detectives were looking for Pauline Guerena, 31, Jose Rafael Celaya, 59, and Denise Amalia Ruiz, 32, who were all inside the two vehicles. Cash in excess of $30,000 was also found in the vehicle.
Detectives obtained arrest warrants for Guerena, Celaya and Ruiz. All three were transported to the Pima County Adult Detention Center and booked on charges of drug trafficking and money laundering.
The investigation has been on-going since 2009, says Barkman.
All three suspects made their first appearance in court via video Thursday night. Guerena and Ruiz were being held on $25,000 bond. Their father Jose Rafael Celaya was being held on $50,000 bond. The judge decided to waive their bond and release Guerena and Ruiz following a recommendation by pre-trial services. Celaya's bond was not waived. He was not released. Members of the Guerena family were present at the video hearing, but did not comment after. Pauline Guerena's attorney Stephen Ralls did speak to 9OYS. He tells 9OYS Guerena just had a baby seven days ago. It was one of the factors the judge weighed in her release.
Jose Guerena died during a SWAT raid on his house in 2011. The Pima County Sheriff's Department said a SWAT team was trying to serve a search warrant on Guerena's house. When they broke down the door, he was pointing an assault rifle at them. Although Guerena never fired, the SWAT team fired at him 71 times, killing him.
