African elephants arrive at Reid Park Zoo

TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - Three African elephants arrived safely from the San Diego Zoo last night, March 6. The transfer included a female named "Samba" and her two offspring "Punga" and "Sundzu."

According to Reid Park Zoo's Curator of Education Vivian VanPeenen, the new elephants are not yet n the exhibit or viewable at this time.

The elephants are expected to be introduced to the outdoor Expedition Tanzania exhibit within the next four days, but it will be guided by their behavior.

The elephants were transported by truck in specially designed crates. They traveled with vetinary staff and their keepers.

Today, the elephants are interacting with their new keepers and have access to the Click Family Elephant Care Center.

"Mabu," the offsprings' father, and another adult female named "Lungile" arrived February 24 and are continuing to get settled.

The exhibit is scheduled to open to the public on March 28th.
