Primary residence affidavit not required this year, not sent with valuations

TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - Property owners in Pinal County may have expected an affidavit with their notices of property valuations mailed last week. The affidavit would require anyone with more than one residence to claim a primary residence.

There is no affidavit required for 2012 because Monday there are two bills, Senate Bill 1217 and House Bill 2486 that are trying to end the requirement. If both bills fail, the affidavits will begin being sent in 2013.

Pinal County Assessor Paul Larkin said he and the other county assessors were worried about people missing the affidavits, residents reporting a suddenly higher bill and then having to correct the problem as a result.

“If someone accidentally failed to fill out and return the affidavit
declaring their house as the primary residence, they might find that
their taxes go up unexpectedly," Larkin said. "That’s because Arizona taxpayers can get a tax rebate up to $600 on their primary residence."
