TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - The Hilton Fire continues to burn near Sonoita, but fire officials said Monday morning that it is now 60% contained.. An estimated 300 acres have charred the area. Firefighters say changing weather conditions could make for a tougher fight.
Firefighters made good progress late Saturday night. The fire just grew about 50 acres, but officials say homeowners aren't out of the woods just yet. By noon Sunday, Bureau of Land Management spokesperson Andrew Atkinson said crews had made significant and homes were no longer threatened.
"The fire creeped down to the homes last night, but firefighters were able to keep the structures safe," said Atkinson.
The Hilton Fire can be see from as far away as I-10 and Kolb. Smoke is still heavy near the command post, but evacuations are only optional. Firefighters watched and waited for hours Saturday to see how increasing winds would affect the fight.
"We are still waiting for some winds to get here," Atkinson said. "That will be the main factor for us today. If they pick up, we'll have a lot more to deal with."
130 firefighters are working to put out the Hilton Fire. The BLM tells 9OYS it's called in approximately 30 more fighters to help with expected winds.
