TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - Hundreds of students hit the street in frustration to protest the end of the Mexican American courses Monday.
The battle over ethnic studies continues as at least 200 students from Cholla, Pueblo, Wakefield Middle School, Tucson High, and other Tucson Unified School District schools walk out of class.
The students are marching down 4th Ave. toward Santa Rita Park in protest of the ban on Mexican American studies at TUSD schools.
Officials don't know exactly where the students are headed, but think they are making their way to TUSD headquarters, 1010 E. 10th Street.
Students caught walking out of class will get an unexcused absence and time served in detention, usually on a Saturday, according to TUSD officials.
Monday is also the day state Sen. Steve Gallardo is holding a news conference to announce his bill to repeal SB1070.
Joining Sen.Gallardo will be the Democratic legislators and community members to talk about the damaging results that SB1070 has added to the image of Arizona, its tourism and economy.
Republican lawmakers plan to also point out positive outcomes from the law.
