Rascal Flatts admits to lip-syncing on ACM Awards

In the first moments of their opening monologue on Sunday night’s Academy of Country Music Awards, Luke Bryan set co-host Blake Shelton up for one of the most talked about punchlines of the night. "Everybody in here tonight is ready to listen to some great, amazing live music. Live," said Luke. Blake responded, "And if you don’t like live music, then you need to go down the block and see Britney Spears."

Unfortunately, later in that same show Rascal Flatts gave a performance of their current single "Rewind" that was pretty obviously lip synched, sparking quite a lot of social media chatter and, in a rare move, a mea culpa from the band itself.

The band posted an iPhone screen shot of a carefully prepared statement on their Facebook page Monday night. It read, "After having performed several shows earlier in the week, [lead singer] Gary [LeVox] lost his voice. So, instead of canceling our commitment to do the show, we made a last minute decision to lip-sync."

Added the group of their lip-synching misadventure, "We've never done it before, and we're obviously not very good at it. We look forward to singing again live in the very near future!"

The band was scheduled to perform again the next night as part of the "ACM Presents: An All-Star Salute to the Troops" special at the same Las Vegas venue, the MGM Grand Garden Arena. No word yet on whether they performed live there Monday night, but you can see for yourself when the special airs May 20 on CBS.
